The Ting Tings – “Hands”

Two hands
I wanna play the piano with two hands
Should’ve learned
Two hands come in handy, it’s the way of the world
Boy you’re not being good to me
You gave me a piano with all 88 keys
But two hands
Whats a girl to do
With two hands
To make the money like the richest of man
Whats a guy to do
With two hands
I can make you be so good to me
Give me all the love with my sexuality

So clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if you’re working too hard
And the beat’s so hard, you’re workin workin

Two hands
What you’re supposed to do with two hands
To get the life of the richest of man
Where you’re supposed to go with two hands
I could have been somewhere in between
When I’m breaking my back and I’m on my knees

So clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if you’re working too hard
Clap your hands if your working to hard
And the beats so hard, your workin workin

And I, I cant escape from the work in LA
And I, I cant sleep in my bed in UK
And you clap your hands if your workin to hard
Clap your hands if you’re working to hard

You see life and its falling away
You slow down and the rest makes you pay
I see you lookin up
You want to think about it

(I shortened the lyrics because there was a lot of repetitions)

Thank you to Mark for reminding me of this song.

I like the contrast between using your hands for working hard and for clapping with them. We do both with our hands. I also like the repeated question in the song: “What you’re supposed to do with two hands?”, because I think we all know the feeling of having a lot of oppotunities, but not knowing what to do with them. So you are standing there in front of our piano of opportunities, with only two hands and no way to hit all the keys on the piano at the same time, and thus, we have to choose. This song uses our hands as an image of our scope as humans, of what we have time to do and can do in our lives. It is about feeling very small and insignificant with only two hands in this big world.
